AI workflow diagram for studying

The safest way to use ChatGPT for studying is to ask it to structure material, quiz you, and point out gaps. Avoid prompts that produce finished assignments or hide the work from you.

Lecture outline prompt

Turn these notes into a structured outline. Separate definitions, claims, examples, procedures, formulas, and open questions. Do not add facts that are not in the notes. Mark unclear sections as "needs verification."

Concept check prompt

Write five conceptual questions that test whether I understand this material. Avoid questions that can be answered by copying a definition. Do not give answers until I attempt them.

Confusion finder prompt

List three common confusions between the concepts in these notes. For each confusion, explain the difference in plain English and give one boundary case.

Source verification prompt

Make a two-column table. Column one is each claim from the study note. Column two is the exact lecture, reading, or textbook source I should verify before trusting it.

Exam review prompt

Compress this week's material into exam handles, common traps, and retrieval questions. Keep uncertain items under a separate "verify" section.

Mistake review prompt

I answered this question incorrectly. Compare my answer with the expected answer, identify the first misunderstanding, and give me one similar question that tests the same idea without copying the original.

Mixed review prompt

From these notes, create a mixed review set with factual recall, application, compare-and-contrast, and error-diagnosis questions. Hide the answers until I respond. After I answer, score each response and make the next question target my weakest area.

Prompts work better when they include the material, the task type, the output format, and a rule against inventing unsupported facts. For studying, the most important instruction is often "wait for my answer first." That turns ChatGPT into a quiz loop instead of another source of passive reading.

Use short prompts for quick reviews and stricter prompts before exams. The stricter version should ask for source-grounded questions, answer keys hidden until after your attempt, and a final weak-spot summary.
